PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATIONS

The Hive Evaluation Experience

Here at The Hive, we strive to offer the most comprehensive Psychological Evaluations and assessments possible. Our psychologists devote a minimum of 40-50 hours per client and prioritize “quality over quantity.”

What is testing?

A psychological assessment is like a blood test for mental health. We bring our knowledge, expertise, and information gathered from you and your child’s team to provide updated diagnoses, recommendations for future treatment, and a comprehensive portrait of your child’s current presentation and needs.

The Process

Once we confirm that you’d like to work with us, we get moving to set up testing. We will meet your child where they are – which might mean traveling into the field in a wilderness program, or to their location in residential treatment. Your child will typically spend a full day with us doing the in-person portion of the evaluation, though in some cases, we may need more than one day to complete our assessment.

While we are working with your child, we will ask you to complete a detailed parent history. We may have additional forms and questionnaires that we send to you to gather needed information. This part is essential, as in many cases, we are unable to provide an accurate diagnosis without a comprehensive developmental history, and your timely participation is necessary for the report to remain on track. After you return your forms, we will meet via video conference for a parent intake interview.

In addition to working with your child and yourself, we will also collect collateral information from your child’s primary therapist and others on their team as needed (educational consultant, past providers, etc.). Hot tip: Include relevant providers in your (Release of Information (ROI) so we can reach out to them as soon as possible!

After we have gathered all the relevant information, including the parent history, the report will take us about 10-12 business days to complete. If we have questions along the way, we will contact you! Similarly, we encourage you to connect with us if anything comes up.

The Review

We believe a report is only as valuable as it gets used and integrated into treatment. As a result, we take following up on an evaluation very seriously. After we complete the report, we will send you the document and allow you some time to review it. Once you’re ready, we can schedule a time to discuss the results and recommendations. Where relevant, we may also support you by connecting with potential programs, school districts, etc.

What’s Included?

Sometimes it can feel like billing for medical services is confusing and convoluted. At the Hive, we want to be clear about the experience of our clients and what they can expect from us. To break it down, let’s discuss some of the things that are included in each evaluation!

First, each evaluation is very client-specific. We are committed to a “quality over quantity” approach and typically spend between 40 and 50 hours on each case from start to finish.

Here is how some of that time is spent:

  • Travel to and from the testing location. At times this involves significant off-road navigation!
  • Preliminary interviews with the treatment team (Parents, Therapist, Consultant, etc.)
  • Testing time with the client
  • Clinical interviews with the client
  • Collateral interview with the treatment team and other past providers as relevant
  • Evaluation reviews with the client (as appropriate) and their team

Other aspects of the evaluation creation include scoring measures, producing written descriptions of test measures, coordinating calls, preparing and taking notes for clinical and collateral interviews, collaboration with program staff, therapists, and field departments, and consultation within our team about client presentations and needs.

The primary work of the evaluation, however, falls outside of the bounds of these specific line items and includes Dr. Boveda and Dr. Kolaski’s experience and education in psychology and expertise in your child's presenting issues. A quality evaluation not only reports on the direct information found but also integrates this information into a clinical conceptualization, including recommendations for future treatment.

Additional Costs (if applicable): To be billed to the client on a separate invoice. These are NOT included in the Evaluation & Assessment Fee.

  • Airfare
  • Lodging
  • Vehicle Rental or Ride Share

QEEG Brain Mapping & Neurofeedback

Honey Bee Vintage Illustration

What is a QEEG (e.g. “Brain Map”)?

A Brain Map, otherwise known as a QEEG or Quantitative Electroencephalogram is a diagnostic tool that measures electrical activity in the brain in the form or brainwave patterns. This gives us visibility into areas of the brain that dysregulated and contributing to a person’s struggles. A QEEG Brain Map also informs potential neurofeedback protocols that can help the person alter their brainwave patterns in a way that can mitigate or totally remediate these symptoms. When used as an adjunct to psychological testing, it provides objective, real-time insights into brain activity patterns and brain function. This can enhance the understanding of various psychological conditions by identifying specific neural correlates associated with symptoms. Additionally, QEEG can help in tailoring more personalized treatment plans by pinpointing areas of brain dysfunction or imbalance. Ultimately, integrating QEEG with psychological testing enriches the diagnostic process, potentially leading to more accurate assessments and effective interventions.

Educational Trainings

Dr. Boveda and Dr. Kolaski are committed to the notion that a rising tide raises all boats. Where we have expertise, we want to share and educate others.

In particular, have you ever felt that your team regularly reviews evaluations and does not know what they are looking at? Testing is complicated and many providers do not learn how to evaluate and utilize psychological assessments as part of their training. Let us come help teach you how to utilize testing in your clinical team properly!

We also offer training and education on a variety of other topics, so please reach out if you’d like to discuss or schedule.

OUR

TEAM

Geometric gold shape abstract frame border background element

Ingrid Boveda, Ph.D.

Founder, Counseling Psychologist

Ingrid knew she wanted to pursue psychology since she was the awkward middle schooler living in Miami Florida. She has always been driven to seek to understand, and to be understood, as well as to help others make sense of their experiences. Early into her graduate training, Ingrid unexpectedly realized that she was learning just as much about herself as she was learning about others and how to help them. She recognized that to help others requires a lot of patience, grace, and a genuine desire to want to connect, even if it feels intimidating. In her work, Ingrid utilizes an interdisciplinary approach that equally values the input of the client, family, therapist, and consultant.

Ingrid provides psychological and neuropsychological evaluations with children, adolescents, and young adults that are in residential, therapeutic boarding school, and wilderness therapy programs. She also sees clients for testing outside of these settings. Ingrid is licensed through PSYPACT, and can therefore practice in most states.

Ingrid has developed several areas of expertise, including:

  • Neurodevelopmental assessments (including autism) from a neurodivergent affirming lens
  • Nonverbal learning disorder (NLD)
  • Possible exposure to substances in-utero
  • Effects of traumatic brain injury on functioning
  • Executive function difficulties
  • Issues around adoption and attachment
  • Biculturalism and identity development
  • Developmental trauma
  • Issues within the family dynamic that are impacting the client and treatment progress

Education and Prior Work Experience

Ingrid completed her undergraduate degree at Florida International University, where she also minored in Statistics. She continued her education at the University of Utah, where she earned her Masters and Doctoral degrees in counseling and psychology. Ingrid describes her career as a testing psychologist as a “happy little accident” because her initial intent was to pursue teaching and academia. Since beginning her graduate training, Ingrid has worked with children, adolescents, and adults in university, outpatient, inpatient, residential, and wilderness therapy programs.

Personal

Ingrid is a true blue nerd at heart, and enjoys videogames, anime, and reading when she has the time. These interests have allowed her to connect with many of her clients on a more than surface level, allowing them to feel appreciated and “seen.” Ingrid also enjoys going on adventures (whether near or far) with her family, fitness, travel, and considers herself a die-hard dog person.

Geometric gold shape abstract frame border background element

Allie Kolaski, Ph.D.

Counseling Psychologist

Allie is a warm, compassionate, and knowledgeable Utah and PSYPACT licensed psychologist who at her core believes that people are doing the best they can. She brings a validating and challenging approach to her work, aiming to provide information, clarity, and direction from diagnosis and comprehensive assessment. It is her overarching belief that an accurate diagnosis and the evaluation process can be both practical and profound and that all clients deserve to be approached from a strength-based perspective.

Allie is curious, down-to-earth, and has a strong work ethic and sense of integrity. She has a special interest in working with and supporting important interpersonal relationships and the challenges brought by our connections with those closest, which is clear in her ability to discuss complex family dynamics in her reports. She also has a specialty focus in trauma intervention and assessment, and autism and autism assessment.

Dr. Kolaski’s specific areas of expertise include:

  • Autism and autism assessment
  • ADHD
  • Neurodiversity in women and girls
  • Complex and acute trauma
  • Family systems
  • Adoption
  • Identity development
  • Personality pathology, including BPD
  • Executive functioning challenges
  • Issues related to emerging adulthood/failure to launch
  • Mood disorders and anxiety
  • Severe pathology, including bipolar, schizophrenia, and others

Education & Prior Work Experience

During her time as an undergrad at Princeton University, Allie discovered her passion for working with struggling adolescents and young adults as a leader in a freshman orientation program. Following graduation, she continued to pursue this path in wilderness therapy as a field guide, clinician, and researcher. Eventually, after many, many nights in the field, she realized that she wanted to direct her energy into more advanced clinical work and began her doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology at the University of Utah.

Personal

In her free time, Allie feels lucky to enjoy the outdoor activities that Utah has to offer, including skiing, biking, and trail running mountain ultramarathons. She is also working to complete her goal of 40 marathons before turning 40 (she will fiercely debate with you that running a 50-milter does not for two). She is most happy in red rock desert with her husband and their two mutts.
